The Weld Trust recently awarded $3,636,644 through 29 grants to support the health and education of Weld County residents. This was the last of three grant cycles to be funded this year.
“Historically, most of The Weld Trust grants are awarded in response to an application from nonprofits, schools and government entities for a program or project which benefits Weld County citizens. These gifts, known as Key Funding Initiative grants, align with at least one of our six areas of focus in health or education,” explains The Weld Trust’s Chief Executive Officer Jeff Carlson.
The Weld Trust has six key funding initiatives (KFIs). The education KFIs include childhood literacy, access to resources and workforce development. The health KFIs include housing stability, food security and physical & behavioral health.
“What we find is that our funding initiatives are inter-related. If, for example, a child is hungry, they are not going to be well prepared to learn. Or if a person is unemployed or underemployed, they are more likely to encounter unstable housing. When we support a program in behavioral health for youth, this may indirectly impact their behavior and engagement in school,” Carlson observed.
In addition to the KFI grants for which the applicant requests funding, The Weld Trust also awards Proactive grants which are collaborative projects identified through outreach by our Grants team.
“This latest round of grants awarded included five Proactive grants. These Proactive grants address a specific community issue identified by staff through collaborative discussions,” Carlson shared. “We are intentionally identifying projects involving community challenges that closely align with our mission-focused work for organizations working together to deliver the greatest impact.”
The five Proactive Grants made up over $2.1 million of the $3.6 million awarded during this grant cycle.
