The Weld Trust recently awarded a Proactive Grant for $200,000 to Book Trust to promote literacy in Title 1 elementary schools. This program supports literacy by building home libraries with books selected by the student. The Book Trust allows every student to select two-three books each month of the school year from the Scholastic flyer at no cost to the family.
A Title 1 school is defined by the Colorado Department of Education as at least 40% of enrollment is from families experiencing poverty. The Book Trust program serves Title 1 schools in Greeley-Evans District 6 and is expanding to include schools in Johnstown-Milliken RE-5J, and Weld County RE-1 School District.
“Our Proactive grants are grants where our staff identify a need in the community out of collaborations with key nonprofit and school stakeholders,” explained The Weld Trust Chief Executive Officer Jeff Carlson. “Reading proficiently has a direct tie on a student’s success in school. This program gets books in homes, and with the kids selecting the books, they are more likely to be interested in reading.”
With The Weld Trust grant, Book Trust aims to serve nearly 3,200 Kindergarten through fifth grade students.
